After your weight loss surgery, you will also absorb less calcium, and your body truly cannot do without it! Calcium is an essential nutrient that helps maintain strong bones and teeth and contributes to the normal functioning of your muscles. Elan has developed the Calcium Chew chewable tablets specifically for people who have undergone weight loss surgery to help meet your daily calcium needs. Calcium Chew contains calcium citrate, a form of calcium that is well absorbed by your body. Additionally, Vitamin D3 has been added to the Calcium Chew chewable tablets, as it enhances calcium absorption in your bones. Calcium and Vitamin D3 contribute to the maintenance of strong bones and teeth.

The required amount of calcium depends on your surgery. Based on the internationally recognized guidelines from scientific associations (ASMBS and IFSO), we recommend taking at least 1,200 - 1,500 mg of calcium per day. It’s also important to take no more than 500 mg of calcium at a time, to allow your body the opportunity and time to absorb the calcium. For the best advice after your surgery and tailored to your personal situation, we recommend consulting your healthcare provider.

Calcium is not included in Elan’s WLS products (Compass, Believe, and Supreme products) because calcium inhibits iron absorption.

Important

If you are also using Elan’s WLS products, do not take the Calcium Chew chewable tablets at the same time as your WLS products. There should be at least 2 hours between taking these supplements to allow your body sufficient time to absorb the iron properly.
